Why do you need a professional to remove or treat mould?

When you pay a professional to come in and resolve a mould problem, you expect them to deliver a service that is beyond your own skillset and expertise. You could buy a fungicidal sterilant and wipe or spray it onto a mouldy surface relatively easily. However, professionals know that 95% of mould is invisible and at the point at which you can see mould on a surface, your property is likely saturated with invisible mould spores. Spores drift on the air and settle across a room - onto surfaces, down into carpets, curtains and soft furnishings. This sounds dramatic, but consider the following from US-based fellow mould removal experts Mold Busters:

'Mold begins to grow as soon as its spores land on a damp, fibre-rich material (wood, fabric, drywall…) and it can spread around the house within 24 to 48 hours. It colonizes in one to twelve days and grows at one square inch per day. In less than a week, it can cover surface areas of several square feet.'

A professional, therefore, would look to apply a mould treatment in a systematic and comprehensive way, in order to attain a near-total coverage of your home and its constituent parts. It's because of our comprehensive, systematic approach, discussed below, that we feel confident in offering a warranty.

Can I spray black mould with bleach and wipe it away?

A quick look online will return lots of regurgitated articles; all variations on the same theme. That is that you can just tackle a mould outbreak with over the counter cleaning products, like bleach, and wipe any visible mould away with a cloth afterwards. This, unfortunately, is not accurate and can actually be dangerous. Mycologist Heike Neumeister-Kemp, also known as the 'Mould Lady', says that it's one of the biggest misconceptions out there.

'The fungi contain melanin and the bleach just takes the colour out, but the fungi are still there, you are just masking it. Six weeks later it appears to come back but it was never gone.'

Not only does bleach not eradicate the mould, but it actually aggravates it. Mould is a living organism and reacts in self-defence to any perceived threat. If sprayed with bleach or wiped with a cloth, it reacts by aggressively sporing into your airspace as a means of survival. Your air is now absolutely saturated with mould spores and the harmful mycotoxins which attach themselves to mould spores. These can cause or exacerbate a whole host of illnesses as they're toxic to humans and animals. The abundance of mould spores will eventually settle, take root and start growing, meaning the problem is likely going to come back with a vengeance.

Even if you do find something that can break down a mould cell wall, without specialist equipment, you're unable to achieve total coverage of surface mould, much less do anything to affect the mould spores in your airspace. 95% of mould is invisible, so at the point at which you can see mould growth, your air is likely full of mould spores which will invariably settle and begin to grow again.

How Does Professional Mould Treatment & Remediation Work?

Most mould remediation companies and specialists use fogging technology to eradicate the mould. Foggers are able to distribute a professional-grade sterilant evenly and comprehensively ensuring all surfaces are covered. Most remediation companies use ULV foggers, which is a 'wetter' fog. Wetter that is, in comparison to the innovative patented dry fog technology we use at Pure Maintenance UK. It's our innovative, market-leading technology, explained in greater detail below, that gives us the confidence to offer a 12-month warranty.

How Does Pure Maintenance's Dry Fog Technology Work?

We administer two dry-fogs into a property with a mould problem. Our patented dry fogger condenses the first dry fog, our sterilant InstaPURE, into a smaller molecular size than is possible with ULV technology.

This means three things: First, it is unable to condense on surfaces and dwells in the air; reducing the abundance of mould spores and harmful mycotoxins traditional methods can’t deal with. Second, our dry fog machine creates positive air pressure, and we treat in a sealed room and hold the fog there. Third, because the dry fog fills the sealed treatment room and dwells there, it reaches every surface the air touches.

We then administer our second dry fog, our anti-microbial film EverPURE, which also coats every surface the air touches, creating a covalent bond with the surfaces. The anti-microbial film is made up of positively charged nitrogen molecules with carbon atoms stacked on top. Microscopically, it looks like a bed of nails as the carbon atoms create a spike. Any new pathogens introduced to the property following our treatment are electrostatically attracted to the positive charge and the carbon spike pierces the outer membrane, denaturing the microbe. Essentially, we've created an environment totally inhospitable to mould (and other pathogens and micro-organisms). This coupled with the tailored aspect of our treatment plans, are what makes us so sure the mould won't return.

A Tailored Mould Remediation Treatment Plan

As stated above, fogging is the industry standard in the eradication of mould. But, it's important to clarify; there is no silver bullet when it comes to resolving a mould problem. Every house is different and every mould problem is the product of a unique combination of circumstances. Pure Maintenance UK operates under Dewpoint-accredited technical governance. Our technicians understand how the delicate balance of humidity, air temperature, surface temperature, structural integrity, air pressure and ventilation combine to cause mould growth. When we remediate your mould problem, we tailor our approach to take into account all of the variables within your home. Our warranty is discussed below.

Pure Maintenance UK Offer a 12-Month Re-Treatment Warranty With Their Mould Remediation

It should by now be clear that we treat the home for what the survey actually finds, then prove it - reset to outdoor-air levels. EverPURE leaves a durable antimicrobial layer that helps treated surfaces resist regrowth. Separately, we back the work with a 12-month warranty: if treated mould returns within 12 months - where the agreed ventilation/humidity plan's been followed and any flagged source repaired - we come back and re-treat free.
